Children’s Dream Foundation / Give Kids the World (GKTW)

All I can say is WoooooooooooooHooooooooooooooooooo!

We met with the ladies from the Children’s Dream Foundation last week @ the Chik-Fil-A on 4th St N in St Pete. Channel 13 didn’t show up, but channel 8 did. We had the dvr set for channel 13 so if we made the news we missed it. The Mayhew’s were there with new haircuts and shiny new tap shoes on Peyton’s feet.

Peyton and Adelaine received 2 huge baskets full of fun including Fairy wings, a frilly skirt thing and other girly princessy stuff. Before Adelaine, Angela was definitely in a male dominated house, with sports toys, sports apparel, and toy army men. Adelaine is all princess and can often be seen sprinting through the house with her high heels on chasing the boys with a Star Wars light saber in her hand.

We also received a 3 day Disney Park hopper pass for Ashley. She will be staying with us at GKTW for the weekend. She has been such a huge part of our family through this ordeal and it is only fitting that she join us on our adventure. Also, this will allow Angela and I to go out once or twice while we are in the Orlando area. We have finally started a weekly Date Night. This is something that we were supposed to do from the beginning of our marriage, but hey it has only been 8 years since we consistently focused on each other. This past year has been trying emotionally as well as financially. We are committed to making it a pleasant life, but it ain’t always easy living with me. Of course she is perfect and smokin’ hot too…but I digress.

We are trying to tentatively figure out our schedules. We will have 3 day Park Hopper passes to all the Disney resorts, 2 days worth of Universal Studio/Islands of Adventure, Buccaneer Training camp, secret cool fun stuff @ GKTW (we could spend the entire week just at GKTW and have an unbelievably great time), along with all the other fun things to do in the Orlando area.

Did I just mention Buccaneer Training camp? Oh yeah, I guess I did. Buccaneer’s Training Camp player check in is the same day we check into GKTW. Coincidence? I think not. I was talking to Peter about camp while we were at Chik-Fil-A and the ladies from the Children’s Dream Fund mentioned that maybe they could arrange for us to do something extra special while we are there. In fact yesterday, Sandy called me asking what exactly I wanted to do. I was at a loss for words. I felt like Ralphie when Santa asked him what he wanted for Christmas and he couldn’t think of the Red Ryder BB Gun! I mentioned maybe meeting Mike Alstott from the Buc’s as well as Ron Diaz & Ian Beckels from the local sports talk radio station. I really want to hang out in the Sports Animal air conditioned tent to enjoy the camp and not completely melt. These 3 gentlemen all have separate charity fund raising events for The Children’s Cancer Center. I want to make certain that they know how much CCC means to our family as well as every other family that utilizes the center. I also emailed the Executive Director of the Children’s Cancer Center, Mary Ann Massolio, to see if she is able to help me realize my dream…uh uh uh I mean Adelaine’s dream.

Adelaine is excited to go to Buc’s camp. At first it was going to be just the boys. Adelaine was very upset about that. Angela said she would allow me to take all the kids and she would catch some rays by the pool. Last night I mentioned that she could wear her Chris Simms jersey and hopefully have him autograph it, and she instantly jumped in with what her whole outfit would be including the short black skirt?!?!?!? I guess she was just playing it cool. What woman in their right mind wouldn’t like to socialize with young, hot, muscle bound millionaires? You know what, maybe she should just stay by the pool.

Uncle Bob and Aunt Linda live less than 4 miles from GKTW, so we are hoping to see them a few times while we are there. My cousin Drew used to work for the Braves Minor League team that also uses the Disney Wide World of Sports complex that the Buc’s use. Hopefully he will be in town and can hang out with us too. We can have guests visit us while we are at GKTW and their meals cost a whopping one whole dollar.

I packed my bag last night. Angela and Adelaine packed their bags Sunday. Mason and Bowen will pack theirs tonight. Oh, another score for the home team yesterday. We received our latest MonaVie order and it was incorrect. The company told us to keep what they sent and shipped out the proper juice that we ordered. Bonus case! When you break down the cost per serving of MonaVie it is less expensive than a Happy Meal, and it obviously has much more nutrition, I think a bag of Cheeto’s has more nutrition than a Happy Meal. We don’t usually order a month worth of Happy Meals at a time. A bonus case is like hitting the jackpot.

Tomorrow is Friday for me at work. I am more excited than the kids. We haven’t been on a family vacation for over 4 years. Yes, we do live in sunny Florida and we spend many a Sunday evening at the beach, but a Family Vacation will be special. Just call me Clark Griswold. We are loading up the family truckster and heading to Wally World.

I know this sounds like a lot of fun, and believe me it will be. It still is not a fair trade for a sick child. Protect yourself and your family daily. Prevention of most diseases including cancer starts with a daily dose of exercise and good nutrition. If you think you do not have the time or money, imagine the time and money being sick would cost you.

The Acia berry made the evening news on Monday, July 16th. We can only hope that more studies will be done on the effects of this #1 Super Friut and it’s powerful components which fight disease and so much more!

Antioxidant supplementation is generally safe during cancer therapy.
Read on…

The January/February and March/April 2007 issues of the journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine published a two-part article which concluded that, contrary to long-held beliefs, antioxidant and other nutritional supplementation during chemotherapy or radiation does not interfere with these treatments.
Researchers stated, “A single, front-page interview in The New York Times in 1997, which was not based on published scientific work, and a single research paper involving mice, along with a press release by its author in 1999, led to the erroneous notion that vitamin C interferes with chemotherapy and radiation in humans. This notion soon applied to all antioxidants as physicians, patients, the media, the American Cancer Society, and scores of websites took the same position without reviewing the scientific evidence.” The latest research identified 50 human studies involving the use of dietary supplements along with chemotherapy and/or radiation. Not only were antioxidants and other nutrients found not to interfere with the treatments, but in 47 of the studies supplements were associated with protection of normal tissue and a reduction of side effects. Increased survival rates were found in 15 of the studies. The authors explain that, due to a loss of regulatory mechanisms for the uptake of antioxidants, cancer cells accumulate excessive amounts of the nutrients, while healthy cells do not. This defect decreases the oxidative reactions needed for the generation of the cells’ energy. Additionally, the nutrients elicit other effects on cancer cells not related to their antioxidant activity. Dietary food supplements, including antioxidants, are generally safe and can often be used to improve cancer patient care. Altern Ther Health Med. 2007 Jan-Feb;13(1):22-8. Altern Ther Health Med. 2007 Mar-Apr;13(2):40-7. Note: Dietary food supplements and antioxidants referred to in this study were typical vitamin/mineral/antioxidant supplements, and did not include herbal treatments or products. The information provided here should not be used to replace the advice of the physician. It is intended to be an aid in discussion with the health care specialist regarding appropriate use of nutritional supplements during cancer treatment.
